There seems to be a virus going around that is modding people's host file so that they cannot access mininova or TPB.

Remember this from 2009? Well, it's back.

Experiencing problems like:

Cant seem to get to Piratebay using IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera or Safari.

Unable to navigate to other areas of the site.

===============================
The solution:
===============================

1. Click Start
2. My Computer
3. Local Disk
4. Windows
5. System32
6. Drivers
7. Search for 'host'
8. Open the first host file with notepad...
[ If there any entries containing mininova/thepiratebay/any torrent sites delete them. Along with the IP's above the URLS (Localhost 127.0.0.1 ...etc) ]
9. Save.
10. Open the second host file, then same as before.

Note: If you cannot Save the file right click the file, properties, then untick 'Read Only'. Then it should work.

===============================
- How to know if you have been affected..
===============================

Open your browser...
Navigate to either of the below sites....

http://www.thepiratebay.org
http://www.mininova.org

If it doesn't work or you cant go to any other parts of the site, then you need to fix it using the method above.

==============================
Origin
==============================

The trojan in question (Troj/Qhost-AC) is a rather unusual one. It doesnt seem to install spyware or traditional malware, but instead blocks access to the BitTorrent sites.

Aside from blocking the sites in question, the trojan caused popups and even played a sound file saying that downloading is wrong. This one came from a bad torrent on TPB, the trojan was in a Keygen, The bad torrent was removed from The Pirate Bay soon after users commented that the key generator didnt work, but it is safe to assume that this is not the first and only attempt to spread a trojan like this one.

The question remains, who is behind this? While some might argue that the MPAA, RIAA or other anti-piracy advocates might be the source, It may just be likely that the attack originated from a relatively innocent prankster targeting pirates.
