Well the German version's ending was happy too because he did came back and maybe i should write a script for an American remake with Emmerich as producer and Malcom Mcdowell as the dummy's voice. I think Joey's dad gave him a chance to live because he has to take care of his mother and he'll be waiting for him when the time comes to be.

It's far superior to this version, believe me and has a better score that doesn't sound like John Williams and Great Mouse Detective

Dude I really enjoyd the us version but the german version is more MOVIE :) and the music is far better!!!

this was a great fantasy movie with a warm, sentimental glow in the steven spielberg tradition, and that little girl's line about "the light, it was like the sun going up" was touching

I know it's very Spielberg and Lucas like, but wait until you see the even better superior German cut which is better, makes more sense and has a superior music score.
It's similar to how New World Pictures in 1985 released Miyazaki's Nausicaa here in the states as a butchered dubbed version called Warriors of the Wind which does something different.
