UC San Diego operates the largest outdoor shake table worldwide for earthquake engineering research. This shake table is part of the NEES NSF collaboration initiative. The experiment shown was conducted under a NEESR grant from UNR to explore the seismic loads imposed on bridge structures if the bridge moves into the approach ramp abutments on either end of the bridge.

  • Do they have sand in there? I don't get how this structure would fit into an approach ramp abutment. Looks to me like a test to see how the soil fails under seismic loading, though I guess I'm probably wrong after reading the description.
