Richard Burton (1925-1984) ardently recites Robert Frost's (1873-1963) concise, speculative and strangely brilliant apocalyptic 1920 poem.
Originally read for BBC Radio in 1978 around the time of Burton working on Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds".

  • what a voice, what a poem.

  • @Icequeen1962 It's a powerful, thought-provoking poem, I agree. Playfully concise, yet fiercly nihilistic. Just like me! I have lots of other Burton recordings never released on CD that I should upload, so subscribe and you'll hear good things very soon!

  • I transfered this recording from audio cassette (great format for poetry, ie. no fast-forward or "skipping"). Best reading of this short, brain-envigorating slice of apocalyptae! Check out Burton doing the King Arthur speech from Camelot:

    Enjoy!

  • @GordonMorrice Indeed, a short poem but very effecting.Skillful juxtoposition of the metaphor,

you must be a fire sign then??? lol.

  • Etched in diamonds ! ! peerless. In his sphere (as Sinatra in his) "The Voice" (male) of the twentieth century. Burton was an especially cerebral, deeply contemplative actor, and this via his virile yet champagne Voice did best justice to his and many great poetic passages ... one can never tire of hearing his epiphanic recitatives as King Arthur in Camelot: especially the Merlinlike trance, spell he puts on us "Each evening ... from December to December; / Before you fall asleep upon your cot"

  • Gotta love Richard Burton's voice. I'm gonna go and listen to Jeff Wayne's musical version of The War Of The Worlds now!

  • Tell us again the site ofr King Arthur speech please. The link below doesn't work.
