Gene Shirk Stadium
All three units performed well as the Albright College football team dominated Geneva College 46-10, Saturday night in its home opener at Shirk Stadium.
The Lions offense totaled 418 yards, and its defense and special teams scored touchdowns as Albright improved to 2-0 on the season.
Junior quarterback Adam Galczynski was 7-of-10 for 163 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown bomb to senior Scott Pillar. Sophomore TJ Luddy was also efficient, throwing for 144 yards on 10-of-15 passing.
Pillar had a game-high 127 yards, including two outstanding touchdown catches. Classmate Josh Bakala had 71 yards on five receptions, while Daniel McNair caught four balls for 71 yards.
The Lions jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first four-and-a-half minutes of play. Senior Josan Holmes punched the ball in from one yard out after an eight-play, 71-yard drive to open the contest. The series included a fourth down conversion by Holmes two plays before his touchdown.
On Geneva's first play from scrimmage, sophomore Drew Peterson picked off Zach Hayward and went the other way with it for a 33 yard touchdown return. Galczynski found Matt Filosa in the end zone for the two-point conversion.
Albright's special teams added points in the second half as cornerback Michael Rice picked up a bad long snap at the 10-yard line and scored to give his team a 39-10 advantage.
Other special teams performed well, with freshman kicker Jordan Loiodice connecting on 1-of-2 field goals and 5-of-5 PATs, punter Brooks Mitzkewich averaging 39.5 yards and no returns on a pair of kicks and Holmes breaking out a 34-yard punt return.
Pillar capped the scoring with a tough 16-yard TD catch, out-leaping his defender and holding on to the ball despite a pass interference call on Geneva.
Junior Zach Groff came off the bench late and broke a 26-yard rush, almost going free before getting pulled down from behind.
Defensively, Ryan Ott had a team-high nine tackles, while Jose Correa, Sean Cunningham, Fran Hall, Don Gould and Tyler Hamlet had a role in four total sacks.
Hayward threw for 172 yards on 19-of-36 passing for Geneva. Dillon Goodell had a team-high 11 tackles, including two for a loss.
The Lions are home again next weekend as they open Middle Atlantic Conference play with a visit from Wilkes. The Colonels were unable to compete this weekend due to a weather evacuation.
