I was inspired by DadHav's latest video where he shows his beautiful magnet bearing "window" motor. I decided to build somethng similar with on hand parts and a few parts that I could get locally. The motor rotor is like a Mendocino motor design the way that it is magnetically suspended. The difference is that in this design ALL the magnets are ring magnets.

  • I can't seem to find any ring magnets that large :/ Did you just pull them off speakers?

  • @72fr250 -----I found the large ceramic ring magnets in a plastic paper clip holder. The Dollar Tree store near me had them. I had to rip the paper clip holder apart to get to it. I think that old speaker magnets are a good source also.

  • Lid. Thanks, but I'm sure you can find others using this idea. I've seen some going vertical too. I try to make it so people can understand a little better how it's made and works. I'm working on the machining video now. Man, I can't believe the rotor stays suspended with such an air gap. Some time try a mirror on each side with only enough space that you can hear a slight rattle. Then fine tune so the rotor will stay at either side. I've had rattling while it was running 15 minutes free spin

  • @DadHav ---Thanks John. I got the second mirror mounted yesterday. I'm still working on balance and cogging issues but this rotor arranrement works well.

  • @DadHav ---Thanks John. You are right about this having been done before. I found another video showing a vertical one of these. I just lucked out with air gap on mine. It was just the combination of magnets that did it. Yesterday I mounted a second mirror like you suggested.

  • hi would putting magnets on either side of the spindle (con-vexed magnet) and opposing magnets ( con-caved magnet) where you have the mirror and on the other side get rid of the friction part of your motor?

  • Tutorial? :)

  • You can get magets from speakers ;) oring magnets...

  • This is great. I realy want to try this out. What do you exacly need to do this?

  • very inspiring. I've been starting to experiment with a bunch of discarded free speaker magnets from stereo shops.

  • Thanks
