Well I was planning to land on the beach in the hang glider and find the geocache nearby, but things didn't quite work out as planned. Thankfully the glider absorbed all of the impact and I walked away without even a bruise - well, only to my pride; and wallet. This is what you call a "sub-optimal" landing.
It could have been much worse. I am very thankful to come out of unscathed.
BTW, after that massive stack, I gave up on finding the geocache.

Depends on whether it is 2nd hand or new. Also depends on whether it is a beginner, intermediate or high performance glider. A good 2nd hand glider can cost anywhere from $1500 to $2000 up. A fully optioned high performance glider could be around $12k - $15k. See moyes.com.au or airborne.com.au

I picked up a good second hand early 80's model for $400 off ebay a while ago. I've been teaching myself by gliding down the grass hills on the outskirts of town. This weekend will be my first off the cliff at Stanwell Park. There is a huge amount of info on the internet and I have saved myself thousands of dollars wasted on "professional" tuition and overpriced modern gliders.

You could be right Rob. The air was certainly bumpy on the turn. Time to get the chainsaw out!

Just kidding. I'm sure there are people out there with this view. But seriously, has a few hundred (licensed and properly trained) hrs experience in Quicksilvers and Thrusters given me a good base to convert to HG (with professional tuition). The feel of flight, stalls, turns etc similar or will I have a struggle to get the feel of a different flying technique.

BTW, from all the info on the internet, anyone who buys a 30 year old glider and jumps of the nearest hill would be tired of living ;)

...at least one experienced pilot I know won't climb tall ladders, go on rooftops, etc. because of the height. Yet he routine flies thouands of feet high, feeling securely hooked in, and there's no sensation of falling (from my experience). First flights begin a foot or two above the ground, on a sandy or grass-covered slope after warm-ups and practice on flat ground.
