Uploaded on May 26, 2010

On May 24, 2010, the Savannah River Sites (SRS) massive K Cooling Tower was safely demolished as part of the Site-wide Footprint Reduction Initiative funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

As the second-largest cooling tower to be demolished worldwide, the 450 foot-tall and 345 foot-wide tower posed a unique challenge to SRS project managers and commanded the attention of even the most seasoned industry veterans.

Amazing I watched this structure being built making contractors millionaires on the tax dollar. What’s more amazing is that it was never put into operation for even for 1 second. Great job, should just have let everyone wipe their behinds with $100’s for a decade.

I understand the size thing, but what is it about what they do that's scary? They transfer waste heat back to the atmosphere. They're one of the most innocuous parts of any power plant which uses steam to drive turbines. Chimneys belching out flue gases at coal-fired plants are a lot scarier.

I understand that they're commonly associated with nuclear power plants (even though they're used in coal plants too), but there's really nothing particularly scary about them.

The shape, size and structure scares me too, here in Great Britain we have some strange shaped cooling towers that look like they'll give way on you. :-P
