VICTOR 19095-A issued around 1923. Billy Murray and Ed Smalle were like two peas in a pod when it came to popular music. It's no wonder why they were so popular in their day. This sentimental side is played on a VICTOR TALKING MACHINE VV VI.

  • Wayne,

I've got this on a CD by a record label called Archeophone. I'm not fortunate enough to own it on 78, though. I believe that things like this record ought to be preserved for posterity, and I think putting them on YouTube quite a noble thing to do. I wish you best of luck in your endeavors.

  • Thank you for your kind comments John. I suspect that, like myself, you enjoy the innocence and charm of music from yesteryear. It's wonderful that Archeophone (I like the name of that label) is preserving these historic recordings. Is the version of this song the exact version on your CD? How are the recordings different in tone? Just curious. Of course, this records was played on an acoustic machine with no electric amplification. This is the way people heard it in the day.

  • My grandfather used to recite this to my sister and I at bedtime-- we always thought it was a poem... !!

  • What a sweet memory! Thank you for sharing.

  • Lovely tune! Sound quality is outstanding as well.

  • Thank you guys. Having the sound box rebuilt recently has really enhanced my enjoyment of our Victrola.

  • Great song! I'm a big fan of Billy Murray and I think I just found a new favorite song by him. I'm glad to know there are more folks like me out there who like this old time music too. It gets kind of lonesome for a 29 year old in a hobby like this. I'm usually the odd one out. Thanks.

  • this song is dedicated to the Mayor of NYC and all of his BLOB.

  • Here's a link to the audio of this song as used in an early "Our Gang"/"Little Rascals" short from 1929: audioboo.fm/boos/267819-original-our-gang-opening-theme

  • A hyped up instrumental version of this song was used as the opening theme for at least 2 "Our Gang" (a.k.a. "The Little Rascals") films from 1929 (I believe one of them was "Boxing Gloves"). This was before they started using the now well-known "Good Old Days" theme, composed by Leroy Shields.

  • It might as well be a whole new time warp. That time is immortal in it's gravity towards the future and undrstanding of todays REALITY. Back then people Killed becuse they were told to do it , not like today.......RIGHT !

  • This is the very same record that was played for me, along with others on the Old Victrola my Aunt and Uncle had in St. Louis, Mo. They lived in the same apt. from 1917 until 1984. The whole place was like a museum, same furnature, pictures and hundreds of records from the 20's.

  • I se you got no answer here. That spindle is used to lift to motorboard up and then you can access the motor to oil it when needed.

  • Nice song. Your gramophone is a very nice looking too, I really like the dark wood ones.

  • I have an identical Victrola which was originally purchased by my Great-Grandparents. It's in excellent condition except the little silver spindle (?) on the left front opposite the speed control is missing. What's its function if any?

    Thanks.

  • It's been a long time since I heard it on my CD, but I believe that my version is exactly the same as yours. Not sure, though.

    John
