This is a test of the world's first Sports Activity Coupe, as BMW has named it. How best to explain to you what exactly the X6 is: imagine taking a BMW X5 and a 6-Series coupe and giving them a room for the night. The result in the morning would be the X6. Got it?

We tested the x50i which was wonderful to drive, it's throaty V8 twin turbo propelling you to 'un-SUV' speeds faster than you can imagine. Thankfully, the technology behind the chassis and all-wheel drive system allowed for cornering on par with the performance of the engine, or we would have been testing the ABS and airbags instead!

On the X6 itself, it is hard to find much to criticize except for being a four seater only, it's price obviously puts the vehicle out of reach of many, and the high height of the rear hatch. If you are a shorty, then the hatch may look to you like the kitchen counter top does to a 5 year old. The rear is very high due to the design, but once opened it is functional as expected.

The real issue is who will buy this segment-creator? Likely high-end coupe and performance SUV buyers that want that driving thrill, but need to be a bit practical in their daily lives. If you fit the bill then lucky you. Well done BMW on treading away from the center line with the X6.
