NO COAL: Nina and Meg Go To Jail

On Thursday, 15 November, Nina Otter and Meg Goodman were arrested while protesting Duke Energy's new coal-fired power plant at Cliffside. Here is Nina's response to the media and a message of hope for the growing climate justice movement in North Carolina and across the United States.

I work at Cliffside Steam Station.Duke is a leader in making environmentally friendly electricity. When Cliffside 6 is commisioned, Duke will retire 4 units that were built in 1938 that produce a total of only 200 megawatts ph for a more effecient unit that will generate 600 more megawatts and release much less matter into the atmosphere. To put it simply, we will produce MORE electricity at less cost and releasing less matter into the atmosphere than any other coal plant in the world.

Hi Barry,

We do appreciate the progress that Duke Energy is making, we want to encourage CEO Jim Rogers to think towards the future. Duke can reinvest the money used to expand Cliffside and produce much cleaner, renewable forms of energy, like wind and solar.

The winds won't stop blowing, the sun won't soon cease to shine, but eventually we WILL use up the Earth's coal reserves. We need to get one step ahead of the game and invest in clean, renewable energy sources.

ok all i know is that i work there and they pay me good lmao!!!!!! but mr. barrybum pretty much explains everything. this new plant is gunna produce more energy and cause less pollution into the atmosphere so untill they figure out a new cleaner way to produce energy coal plant is the way to go! :)

u need to get your facts straight before speaking to a camera there is no way there is enough wind here to produce enough electricity for the service areas of Duke and all the technology that keeps coming takes more of our power than ever before

Hi Barry,

Cliffside does not have BACT or MACT for mercury. The utter failure of Duke Energy to use the maximum achievable control technology (MACT) for mercury means it will not release less mercury poison into the atmosphere than any other coal plant in the world. So the Duke Energy spin that this plant has the most advanced technology in the world simply is not true. Go to work tomorrow and convince Duke to install MACT mercury technology and then maybe you can make these claims.
