Hellfire 680 thrash and the screams from the SCG gearbox and drive axle with lovely screams into 4th gear. Those old old leyland 680 were 680 cubic inches of beast! The nearest best modern bus would be a voith gearbox enviro 400 being thrashed but the originals are the best!

I used to drive these. You couldn't make time in them, but the worst thing was the vibration. The ticket machine would work it's way off the stand and end up on the floor.

Id forgotten what a real bus sounded like, none of your Dennis Darts rubbish in my day. We had leopards, Tigers, RE's, Volvo's, and even a Renault at one stage.

Nice Video cant beat a bit of 680.

Noboby has nursed her for all the years she was in service, so why start now.
From years of expericance with Leyland Leopards with 680's in they like being thrashed, The would not make that georgous growl if they didn't.
Still one of my long held wishes is to get a decent drive in a 680 powered RE.

Not exactly nursing the old girl! I used to drive these for Parfitts in south wales! Beasts aint the word!

Nice video, I didn't realise Colchester's REs didn't have the opaque skylights in the roof.
If anyone wants to see a proper 680 thrash, then look at my other Video marked Chorleywood 2009 - start it at about 2 minutes 25 seconds, sit back and enjoy this bus going through the gears until it reaches 60mph.......and still has plenty to spare!!
Superb sounds from a Leyland 680

If you have a look and listen to the other videos, I think you'll agree that the bus is driven superbly well. I have never been on an RE driven better, I have to say. And were buses built to be nursed........no, they are work horses and, like you say, a Leyland 680 RE is one of the finest sounds you will hear anywhere!

Thanks for the comment. The owner, Michael Wootten, was driving so I guess he can 'nurse' as he sees fit! For the record, I think he drove the bus as well as I have seen anyone an RE and, anyway, why treat it with kid gloves? The bus was sold last month to an operator in Northumberland for continued operation and preservation.
