Any desktop computer is enough. If you don't require too many fancy features, animations like these can be produced by a couple of hundred lines of program code. If you look on the web for Chaoscope you will find a website and an easy to use program to do visuals like these.

An attractor viewer? Does this mean you pick a system, or input your own parameters to see if the system remains stable?

Well actually I'm rebuilding it from scratch right now. The basic idea is you can pick an attractor type and use sliders to move through the dimensions. A random function searches out random stable parameters. The old app wasn't much versatile, I've got the new one set up so that you can save/download the results directly (makes good wallpapers).
