Well, it's not so easy to explain, better watch the movie or at least all the clips - there are over 40.
Technically at that stage, he hasn't cheated on her. But he was never there for his family and was flirting with his colleague and has an affair with her after he splits with his wife.
There is no black and white in life, you decide who's fault it is, if you can...
Have you seen the "After The Deluge - Alex Kirby's family" - watch for the scene when he goes to bed.

Originally it's available on DVD as a 2 disc set (193 min.) but only region 4, I think.
I've seen a short version (103 min. on 1 DVD) in amazon and some online stores for regions 1 and 2, but I can't imagine how they could have cut 90 minutes of the film without completely ruining it. It's such a beautiful story with many characters and breathtaking music!

I've just read some reviews in amazon about the film and it is exactly as I thought - people say the short version is crap, you can't understand it if you haven't seen the original

Haa, well, his character seems to deserve it in the movie
And actually this helps him a lot to find himself again and be happy, which he seems to have forgotten throughout the years of his marriage
