@DarthPickley I'm not saying we shouldn't do it because it's too risky, I'm saying it's a waste of resources at this time, I think NASA should get WAY more funding so they can research better ways to travel in space. Going to mars now would be like somebody going to the new world in a canoe. Just wait until we have better ships and fuel.
I agree that the business and profit part of space should be taken up by private industry, which it is, but science helps progress society much more than any short term economic plan.
Basically, we are not going to send a mission to Mars because we want to establish large colonies. We do not want to incorporate these with the Military. We want to make it possible for Americans' highest and noblest aspirations to be achieved; to discover and explore. Space remains a frontier full of mystery.
@ZigZagzGoon okay, but it is also true that NASA is a great source of inspiration, and a a great source of jobs (my father works for NASA Goddard).
NASA's science is very big, and NASA's innovations in human science and health contribute to the well-being of our health care system; what health care would there be if medical science had never been funded, because it was too "risky"? None, we wouldn't have x-ray machines if not for the discovery of x-rays.
I don't think we spend too much money on NASA though, we need to spend more money, I just agree that we don't have a need at the moment to send people to the moon or mars, because it's not profitable and the all your eggs in one basket argument doesn't work because we don't have the technology for a self reliant base on the moon or mars just yet. I can't wait for it though.
I love space and I agree with him here. If I were Bill Gates or Warren Buffet I would make shit happen, then I would profit from the new technologies developed for the shit that I made happen in space and make more shit happen.
Penn and Teller Bullshit on NASA really gets the point across. I think the earth and satellite exploration is much more effective and easy to support than the man missions but Problems here on mother earth need looking after.
I agree with Ron Paul that travel to the moon and mars is a fantastic idea. I'm an astronomy buff and a big science fiction fan. I also agree that best way for that to happen, the most efficient, safe, and expedient way, is for it be privatized. I don't know that the government should be spending so much money on this at this time. But maybe if we ended the foreign wars and the welfare, we could afford to spend government money on that!
Maybe I should have clarified, with the space race I was referring to the technological spin-offs which come from projects like these (as to why the goevernment should invest in them) For the scientific breakthroughs you named, When the research is done for such projects they aren't instantly economically interesting so you are pretty much validating my point. take the Superconducting Super Collider in Texas for example, government funding stopped and now Europe Is the leader in Quantum physics
