Prior to the 20th century free market is what built America. That is also what inspired hundreds of millions of people from all over the world to immigrate here.
Anyway manipulating the state so that it works in your favor is not free market and such manipulation is as old as mankind, happening from classical Rome to the East India Company. Or you think that Carnegie and Rockefeller could have happened in a true free market without corporations, LPs and trusts?
The "free market" is a lie.
They used to be chartered for a specific amount of time for a stated purpose. That purpose had to prove benefit to the state and its peoples. Not an all out assault on the economy with oligarchy dominance like you have had since 1868.
Also the free market is limited in scope, large scale scientific research, health care, large works like roads and public transportation cannot happen in a true free market. Not to mention its inability to account for externalities...
