Atula Siriwardane explains the technique briefly here.........
"It's so easy to draw from life this way for a kid or an adult.

Drawing directly with colors is a normal practice with experienced artists. But I had to discover it because I didn't want to turn the small kids who came to my open workshops. It was surprising to realize that it was easier for the kids and adults who are inexperienced (in drawing) because they are not accustomed to outlines. I tried to find a universal technique and this is it.
It may help if you really want to practice this with a rag doll. (It is needed that the doll looks alive and proportionately nice.) Once you master it you can draw anything the same way.

I conduct workshops from 4 years old kids(More) to retired adults(Less). I actually teach nothing intellectually in my workshops. I give them a rag doll and train them to see form and draw form as a whole using the side of the pastel. They are not allowed to draw with memory. And I DON'T ALLOW them to draw ANY OUTLINE. Only forms. They gain confidence and grow very fast.

Kids can draw easier this way because they are less accustomed to draw out lines (and then color). The kids or adults, who are used to draw with outlines have problems but with practice they can manage. If one can drop the tendency to draw the outlines one can draw easily. Ones tendency to draw outlines is the only draw back. With this technique, outline will be automatically shown by the background or the next form or the shadow.

The most important thing here is later one can draw with outlines also. It becomes much easier after practicing this technique properly. Main reason for that is one can see the object as a whole in relation to everything in his sight. (This is the type of awareness called Sampajano Sati as Buddha his technique of Vipassana and Bruce Lee called no-mindedness as he taught with his fighting technique of Jeet Kune Do.)

I am very happy if you also could derive something out of it. And I am happy to give a feed back if you need. " -Asiri

I was skeptical in the beginning. But after I helped Atula(-my Husband) while conducting few workshops I tried the technique and found its so easy and interesting.-Ishara Siriwardane
