First Species Counterpoint 1

This was part of Mariko's 2009 Diploma 2 submission for composition at the Australian Institute of Music. Diploma 2 is the second semester of study there, and is mostly aimed at people who have had little to no formal musical training. Mariko's musical knowledge was starting to get better at the time of this piece, but she had more structured group lessons doing seemingly pointless exercises with little freedom. After people dropped out, she ended up being the only student in the class.

This particular piece was an exercise in counterpoint. The teacher was a bit vague about the rules to be used, so Mariko had to figure a lot of them out. As such, no rules for writing the cantus firmus and few rules about voice leading were discussed, so this is a more relaxed interpretation of counterpoint.
