Yes, carpets are known for not breaking lenses that falls on them.
And your 70-300 lens is not big, she said it was, but she lied.

This is pretty much impossible with a large lens like a 70-200 2.8. I think the most important thing is turn the camera off and point it down so that no dust will get in.
