I have a chat with Markus Schulz while he is in San Francisco to play at Ruby Skye. He talks about that certain quality he looks for in tracks from producers to play on his radio show, Global DJ Broadcast, and what he believes can help an electronic musician stand out these days..

I always say that each time I interview a DJ/Producer, whether it goes well or very ackwardly, I always learn something interesting. Markus has a certain precision about him; he is very particular about what he says and how he says it. There is an exacting quality in his manner and personality that I am sure is reflective in all his work as well as his music productions.

He shows a lot of strength and professionalism that I think comes with appreciation for his career. I've noticed that certain very successful top dogs in the trance/electronic music industry have a pleasant maturity that you don't see very often. Its as if, after working very hard for a long time and then reaping the rewards of a successful career, they have realized how fortunate they are, and they continue to lead on with a sense of gratitude and openness. This openness and confidence was apparent in Markus.

There are a couple of interviews that I have done that I have chose not to edit and post up, and one of the reasons is because the producer, even though they are very successful, have just shut down. The interview, no matter how much enthusiam I muster up, is flat, dead, and beyond boring. They seem to have done it all, seen it all, and said it all, and have lost the reasons why they started producing dance music in the first place. And with that tends to come assumptions and arrogance.

This was not the case with Markus. Even though the hotel where I interviewed him was extremely loud and very distracting, making the final product not up to my standards, I put this snippet of interview out because I think Markus had some interesting things to say, and most of all I could see that he still had a great passion for what he was doing. He works hard, he is open, and most of all, he still cares
