Songwriters-producers and record label owners Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff made Philadelphia the soul capitol in the 1970s. Gamble and Huffs label Philadelphia International had a stable of artists that included the OJays, McFadden & Whitehead, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Lou Rawls and Dee Dee Sharp. Their records featured the duos trademark sound: lush string orchestrations, a powerful rhythm section and a disco beat. They also worked with Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett, and Jerry Butler among others. In 1990, Gamble and Huff won a Grammy for best R&B song, awarded for Simply Reds cover of the Blue Notes 1972 hit If You Dont Know Me By Know. And in 1999, they won the Grammy Trustees Award.
Also watch the great performance by Patti LaBelle. Presented by Jerry Butler.

  • Don't leave out the Delfonics, Intruders back in the '60's.

  • They cut and pasted her performance. The entire thing used to be on here... DAMN! I want the whole version back :(

  • I remember buying my first LP ever back in 1970 in Hollywood, California, and it was a Gamble & Huff production......The LP was : " " THE ICE MAN COMETH " "

Who else ???? The GREAT Jerry Butler ! ! Never Give You UP !

No matter how you treat me.....................Sierra Cuban, Miami, Florida

  • It makes me happy that these two are still alive, since so many from their circle have died too young. Teddy Pendergrass, Harold Melvin, Gene McFadden, John Whitehead...just to name a few.

  • @rufus317 false u don't know anything bout soul train then must have been the only episode u have seen

  • It really takes an idiot to believe that "white America" made Soul Train a legendary success...tsk, tsk, tsk, poor fool.....On a positive note, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, by their own musical history story, were destined to become a musical team. Once united, their genius, creativity, and hard work earned them not only an induction, but the respect and admiration of fans and musicians for generations to come! May God continue to bless and use them to continually touch and inspire humanity!!

  • @MyBetty111 Minister Kenneth Gamble CONTINUES to be a great individual for the things he has done for the Philly community from building homes and community centers in the inner city to making sure his music catalog reaches a new generation of listeners. His belief in Islam does NOT take away from his greatness.

  • I still think Don Cornelius should've inducted them because if it werewn't for Gamble n Huff writing "TSOP" Soul Train wouldn't have ever crossed over to white America and became the success it became.

  • Gamble was once great, but he turned into an Islamist.
