Shlomo Shinnar M.D comments on ICE Funding Extension of FEBSTAT STUDY

ICE is funding and extension of the FEBSTAT study in which Dr. Jeffrey Noebels will test DNA samples from 100 children who have had febrile (fever related) seizures lasting longer than 30 minutes. Dr. Noebels will use an assay he developed with NIH funding to find out if these children have one or more of the 247 ion channel gene mutations on his testing system. This research will identify other ion channel genes, besides, SCN1A, that are implicated in children who have febrile status epilepticus and new genetic causes of epilepsy or epilepsy syndromes.
