In 1994, while promoting WICKED GAMES, underground horror moviemaker Tim Ritter was invited onto a radio talk show with Herschell Gordon Lewis, the Godfather Of Celluloid Gore (some now say Ritter is the Godfather of Video Gore).
Growing up in South Florida, Ritter found Lewis to be one of his biggest influences and respected icons in making DIY Splatter Films, even dedicating his 16mm flick KILLING SPREE to the man in the end credits. Ritter was ecstatic to finally meet the legendary Lewis and couldn't wait to get a book about him signed (which he did before the interview was over).
Shockingly, Lewis pretty much tore Ritter and his movie KILLING SPREE apart live over the air! Some say the shock D.J., looking for ratings and controversy, put Lewis up to it and others say it was just Lewis' honest opinion of the movie and Ritter, but it's always been hotly debated in the underground scene. Up until now, there's only been bootleg audio of this show going around, but we recently unearthed rare, exclusive video footage of the event as it went down.
It's kind of ironic hearing Lewis chastise Ritter for things like "cheap-looking FX, fake mannequin heads, slow pacing, and confusing stories" when those were the very things his own movies were both criticized and revered for when they came out!
File this one under truth is stranger than fiction, folks, especially in the world of splatter entertainment!

I don't know that much about Tim Ritter but he seems like a really, really nice guy. I'm a huge H.G.L. fan and thought he was tough but fair.I know it was probably devastating for Ritter to receive Lewis' criticism (being an idol of his) but Ritter really handled it with grace. I'm definitely going to seek out Ritter's films the guy seems like a true class act.
