We never mix body filler on cardboard , it allows the hardner to suck it up like a sponge , use plastic cutting board .. And I would totally love to take the host out to dinner :)

@fiat5001963 "Dremel tool with a tip so I can V it out" cough cough..............WTF you have a 3/8 drill you DF. You are teaching people how to repair boats my ass. Are you going to be there to retrieve the sunken boats that fail due to your Hollywood approach to boat fixing.

@JamestownTV I build a composite airplane and that was the trick for a non-structural joint filler...

How long do you have to wait before spraying additional coats of gelcoat? Thanks

Great advice! Is that Star class boat behind girl :))
Using bondo as a filler is ABSOLUTELY NOT the correct filler to use. A better filler is to use a two part epoxy and add non-scented talcum powder. Add talcum powder till is has the consistency you need (usually, like peanut butter)... do not make it too runny, otherwise you will be sanding forever! This is a much stronger filler, will not Shrink Like Bondo, and is a much more similar material to the boat material, and is a closer color than bondo as well.

@fiat5001963 That's an interesting tip,I've never heard of talcum powder as a filler.

So it is ok to put gel coat over bondo with no primer? I know in body work, a primer has to be applied to the bondo prior to a base coat or there will be issues. Gel coat goes straight over bondo?

@BakerFX4 No, you do not need a primer to apply gelcoat. Thanks for the question!

damn it, I cut out some gelcoat cracks from my boat the other day, filled them and sanded them back and painted it today. I can see that every spot a have attended to is now recessed...
Do I just apply more putty and not sand as hard this time round?

Yes, you can just apply more gelcoat putty but first you must remove any paint and wipe with acetone. Use a straight edge spreader for a nice, level application.
