Ester Lester

Ester (aka Lester. Often he drops the "L" in his name), is a cancer survivor. An troubling number of Molucann Cocatoos in captivity develop cancer. We don't know why. It could be dietary problems as these birds are only one or two generations from the wilds of one specific island in Indonesia where they eat things that only grow there.

Anyway, Ester's cancer has been in remission now for over 8 years. He's twenty-four years old and seems to be pretty happy. Of course he'll never fly again (lost too many feathers to the disease), and he'll never be able to live as a free-ranging bird. Captive Parrots cannot be released to the wild for many reasons.

Ester is pretty healthy these days. Sometimes his scar from the lumpectomy on his tail seems to bother him but he is always a very sweet bird.

He is a sweetie, sorry to know about the cancer though, its so hard.
