@noose357 most martial arts have sporting formats, kung fu has sanshou, muay thai is mostly a combat sport, judo the same but may be practised just as an art.The arts that have no sports aspect are usually rubbish in real life because they arent fullcontact. The point system in bjj was created to reflect dominant striking or finishing positions in real situations so its a practical system but obviously stalling for points isnt what happens in reality.training for reality is grappling with strikes

@tactzer0 You're absolutely right, I did say that. So the matter is that in my opinion, BJJ is not a martial art. I'm sorry if you disagree but it's my opinion. The point thing is not the only reason why I feel that way, so please don't think I'm being ignorant or "flawed" based off one point. There are a few reasons why I feel that way, but to explain them would be pointless as the majority of people get too entrenched in their own opinion to care. w/e BJJ still rules!!

@noose357 No man. You said, "that type of thinking is why BJJ cannot be considered a martial art". My point was, every tournament for virtually every martial art is done this way; just because you must think that way in a tournament does not mean you are training that way. We train to either improve position or get a submission. To say BJJ isn't a MA because of the way we're forced to think in a tournament environment is flawed logic. In a real fight it's not about points... We all know this.
-
@tactzer0 Really, cuz it's simple combat logic, tried and true since war has been around. I'm not knocking BJJ, and I'm actually a big Eddie Bravo fan, I'm just saying that I cringe when I hear people talking up their points. For the pure sport/game aspect of it, it makes total sense, it's like a body chess body match. I'm just saying in my opinion, it's pretty bad habit to concern yourself with points instead of finishing your opponent.
-
@noose357 that's the most retarded logic ever. This was a tournament - a game. To win the game, you need more points. That has nothing to do with the martial art itself. We aren't training thinking about points man. It's the same thing with Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and virtually every other martial art you have a competition with.

this is not Joe Moreira...Eddie says that he is representing Joe lolz
-
"Now he's in my guard, BUT I'm up on points"
Ok, I know he's in a tournament, but but that type of thinking is why BJJ cannot be considered a martial art. Martial sport, yes, definitely. But the point thinking does you no good when it's conditioning your response for every physical situation you encounter. Your fighting mentality is your training mentality.
Glad to see he got the sub instead of eeking out the win on points, but still so many people "fight" with point winning in mind.

@Theprinceofponeage but when u are used to having the gi and have to defend against so many things once ur in no gi and dont have to defend all the gi chokes it seems so easy. i train in gi everyday but im way better in no gi because of my gi game my game is so much more technical. the gi slows everything down and really makes u think about what u are doing. all the best no gi guys in the world traing with the gi on a regular basis.
