The whole point of a klepto is compulsively stealing, this particular scene demonstrates "being robbed blind" which in this case is accentuated to the highest degree of obviousness. This is what americans commonly call a joke and part of the joke is him not saying anything about it as he is completely oblivious to the situation due to the klepto's "skills". This in turn makes Ernie a very good klepto.
