The annual Tomcat community ball was known as "Fighter Fling". Starting in 1989, the best video clips from all the squadrons were compiled into a short movie and played at the ball. I had the privilege of making the final two videos, for Fighter Fling 2003 and 2004. This is part 2 of 5 for the 2003 video, uploaded straight from the original source.

  • 3:40 that;s MiG-29, not F-14:)

  • You're right Mariottttt, it's a German MiG-29. They joined my squadron in Key West, FL so we could practice dogfighting.

That particular shot was taken from the back seat of an F-14B by a RIO in my squadron, as they were entering the break right over the field.

  • So that means that you flew the F-14B from VF-103, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower?

  • I flew the F-14B, but with a different squadron on a different carrier.

Several Tomcat squadrons got to practice against the German MiGs.

  • Thanks! Sometimes being stuck on the boat really IS like being trapped in the Matrix.

  • The F14 was the only airframe capable of carrying the Phoenix air to air missile. Now that it's gone I feel as though a child sleeping without his security blanket. If the other side comes it will not be a dozen but hundreds of aircraft, including decoy aircraft. The F14/Phoenix may have been our best defense to such attack. I do not feel other fighters will be able to get into position fast enough to be effective with short range weapons nor will the kill ratio be high enough to deter attack.

  • yea I was gonna ask what was with the mig-29...awesome stuff man the whole 22 minute video that used to be so great until wmg cut everything out was a video that inspired me to become a pilot. Unfortunately I blew my knee out and that dream was shattered. I still attend dozens of air shows a year in support!

  • I attempted to listen to this song on its own, but was not very turned on by it without seeing Tomcats (the best).

  • Lol giant pink bunny at 3:30.

  • @TheOriginalBlazin77 The Iranian airforce was sold 80 tomcats. 78 made it to them. the remaining two were sent to the training RAG. No Pheonixes were used were used against Iraqi fighters. The Japanese were looking to also buy the Tomact but opted out. Only two countries had them US and Iran. No others.-----"6 Clear -FOX 2!!"

  • @MUNSTERVFPLT Thats BS. Part of the reason they crushed all of the Tomcats(with exception to static demos) is because Iran(among other countries) still have them.

  • @FelixA9 The Imperial Iranian Air Force weren't sold but about Ten. The factory reps destroyed them before they left the country in 79.

  • Well, they were at least. I think their 29s got sold off to Poland in favor of incoming Typhoons.

  • MiG-29A, I believe.

East Germany had them and after the wall came down they stayed as part of the airforce.

Probably the oldest and saddest version of the 29, but hey, they're the only NATO member flying them, so that's kinda cool.

  • The song is "Free" by powerman 5000

  • Phoenix got tons of kills in the Iran Iraq War.

  • what's the song on this vid???
