If Brian Smith, the young man in this clip, had traveled to other industrialized nations and needed medical treatment, even as an illegal immigrant taken to a hospital emergency room, in England, for example, they would treat him without charge, and give him cab fare back to where he was staying.

It's much cheaper to treat the uninsured outside of hospital emergency rooms. Incidentally, uninsured patients get charged far more in hospitals for the same services that insured patients receive. Hospital collection agencies hound the uninsured, even if they are illegal immigrants, and they get a high rate of return. Who is making all the profit then? The insurance companies, the CEOs, with annual multi-million dollar bonuses.

By law, if not by simple human decency, when people show up ill at U.S. hospitals seeking treatment, they must get medical care. If not just for their own comfort and well being, then in case their illnesses are communicable to others. It's for our protection and health, as much as it is for those uninsured.

Conservatives like those who appeared in the Hardball audience on this program with Michael Moore, whether they be xenophobic, racist or just ignorant of the facts, insist on their opinions being accepted when they ought to be asking questions and listening to others.
