One of the many garbage trains of the NYC subway. There are at least 5 of them, probably more.
Here you see lead cars R40M #4488/4489 hauling 3 garbage container cars, followed by R40 Slants #4282/4283. This is probably the first time R40s are being used for work train service. So, they will stick around in the active fleet for some more years even if they are soon to be gone from revenue passenger service.
Seen on June 13th, 2008 at Church Ave (IND) during PM rush.

  • @SantaFe19484 not sure, but im pretty sure it has something to do with transporting garbage

  • wow i never seen a garbage train before O_o

  • What is the reason for trash cars in the subway?

  • I wonder who hauls garbage through the subway system, and from where to where? There were also money trains back in the 90's that hauled fare revenue as well.

  • I see these trains all the time, but then I'm in Manhattan at around 6 AM to go to work. I wonder how often the crews of these trains find dead bodies, or human body parts, lying on the tracks.

  • @Love4SK

with you level of intelligence, thats a very a nice comparrison.....to someone with your level of intelligence like i said. -.-

the garbage train takes garbage from all the subway stations and takes them to the municipal dump. where that is, i don't know. a regular train would be a train that carries people and transports them from point A to point B

  • @Love4SK the difference, a regular car towing garbage that is picked up from the tracks

  • Yup. At least there are at least 4 pairs (8 cars) of R40's/R40M's in work service.
