The Empire were after Leia, not to kill the rebels.

You're missing a few points there...
1. The Empire doesn't care how many casualties there will be for them. They're like the USSR. Little interest for lives of soldiers, since there are AT LEAST sixteen billion of them.
2. They were after Princess Leia, and blowing up the whole damn ship isn't a very good capture strategy.

Each side had the worst accuracy I've ever seen but the empire had the worst tactic to breach the ship. The only way the empire would win is if they blew up the entire ship.
