A small rock-like object slammed into a Bat Yam beach on Saturday afternoon, surprising sun bathers with a thud and sparking a fire. It was not immediately clear whether the object was space flotsam that had entered the atmosphere and crashed into the sand, or possibly phosphorous waste. Police sappers arrived on the scene and doused the flames. The rock was taken by police to the Israel Geological Survey institute for further analysis. Eli Hagadish, manager of Bat Yam Beach, told Channel Two News that the rock remained on fire for several minutes even after lifeguards placed it in seawater. by jpost.com
