Uncle Vanya -

Imagine being stuck in a house deep in the country with people you either dont like or detest. Communication with the outside world is minimal: no TV, no PC, no telephone, and even the roads are mostly impassable. The countryside itself is despoiled: the wildlife is dying out and the forests are dwindling. This is provincial Russia at the end of the nineteenth century.

Subtitled Scenes from Country Life, Uncle Vanya portrays the hope, frustration and despair of people forced to live together out of economic necessity. Chekhovs tragicomic dissection of a doomed and superfluous landed gentry is tinged with sympathy as well as irony.

Performances dates are October 22/23/24 at 8 p.m., October 25 at 7 p.m., and November 17/18/19 at 8 p.m., in 2010: January 29/30 at 8 p.m., and January 31 at 7 p.m.

Stell dir vor, du müsstest in einem Haus irgendwo auf dem Land mit Leuten leben, die du entweder nicht sonderlich gut leiden kannst oder hasst. Verbindungen zum Rest der Welt gibt es kaum: Es gibt keinen Fernseher, keinen Computer, kein Telefon, und selbst die Straßen sind kaum passierbar. Die umgebende Landschaft liegt brach: Tiere sterben aus und die Wälder verschwinden. Das ist das provinzielle Russland am Ende des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts.

Onkel Wanja, mit dem Untertitel „Szenen aus dem Landleben, schildert die Hoffnung, Frustration und Verzweiflung von Menschen, die aus rein finanziellen Gründen gezwungen sind zusammenzuleben. Tschechows Tragikomödie behandelt diesen verlorenen und entbehrlichen niederen Landadel mit Zuneigung und Mitleid, aber auch einer gehörigen Portion Ironie.
