MORE PROTEST AGAINST ISRAELI ASSAULT ON GAZA, DOWNTOWN NORFOLK, VA, DEC. 30, 2008 - 2ND INTERVIEW

Even though most people know Norfolk, Virginia as the home of the largest American naval base in the world, NOB Norfolk, in this area known as Hampton Roads, which is inundated with other military bases, schools and commands as well, there is still great diversity of opinions and peoples, even within military ranks. On little notice today, Dec. 30, some thirty protesters began gathering at 4:30 PM in front of the City Hall complex at the corner of St Paul Blvd and City Hall Avenue to speak out against the Israeli assault on Gaza. They were still going strong at nightfall when I left around 6:00 PM. I interviewed four of them during the protest. The 2nd interview was with Joe Filipowski from Norfolk, who went into considerable depth of analysis about not only Israeli, but American foreign policy.

Very good point about the origins of the Arabs; however, most people think of Semites as Jews. Martin Luther King's comments are based on the common perception that anti-Zionists are really anti-Jewish. Or, you could say that anti-Zionists are really anti-Jewish and anti-Arab. Either way, King put the term "Zionist" in a favorable light.

That is a common propaganda tenet. Many Jews are anti-Zionist. I am anti-Zionist but have plenty of Jewish friends. Zionism is too exclusive and feeds collective egomania, a group think that "my" group is superior, others are inferior. This is always a prescription for injustice and suffering for all involved.

The Ottomans considered Palestine a region, not a province, but the British recognized this "region" officially as the state of Palestine in 1920, not 1948. The area has long had Jewish, Moslem and Christian inhabitants, the Christians dating back to early Christianity, with a new influx during the Crusades, which is why when you look at many of the archive photos of Palestine, you will note that the women are often not veiled or with headdress. That is because these are Christians or Jews.

Get to know people, and judge them by their actions. Look at the pictures of the dead Palestinian children and learn of the horrific weapons that have been used against them by the Israeli military. There are Jews supporting Palestinians; but, there are also Palestinians supporting Jews. One spoke at our church last month. He upholds the rights of both Arabs and Jews living in Israel and is opposed to the violence endorsed by Hamas.
