Long time no see! I really need to start out with an apology for being gone for so long. I keep trying to get back into doing regular youtubes but it's tough with the lack of time for both my ocarinas and making videos.
Plus it seems kind of pointless to make videos with nothing to show you guys.

So basically like I say in the video, I made this ocarina at least 5 months ago....actually....to be honest I think it was more like 10 months! That shows how often I get to work on them!
So I made a bass months ago and failed. I made it pretty thick too but didn't realize being thicker means it needs to dry slower. So I didn't dry it slow enough and it cracked. I tried again with that knowledge and made an even bigger, deeper better one. I slow dried it for over a months. Probably WAY longer than needed but I wanted to be 100% sure it'd survive because I put a lot of work into it and 2, I didn't have time to work on it anyways.
So after it was dried, I played around with it a bit, put a few tiny holes, mainly just to mark where I wanted them and put it aside because I had no time.
Finally, months and months later, after moving and re-finding it, I decided I'd finish it.

Plus, I've been thinking of a few song ideas that could really use the bass so even more reason to finish it :)

Like I said, it's real freakin thick! So it took way longer to tune it and being bigger than usual the holes were bigger too and I didn't have drill bits for the big holes so I manually have to scrape them out by knife.
And then getting into the higher notes took a lot of fine adjustments to the sound hole. I'm a bit rusty so it took a long time.
Today I sanded it like crazy to make it look nice and hopefully thin it out a little bit....lighten it up. It's still big and heavy bit better than it was.

So now I think I've got about 1 more night of playing around with it and it'll be ready to be fired.....which leads me to the next topic.

Pretty straight forwards and simple, like I already said in the vid.
I found a add posted for pottery classes in the grocery store. I figured this person must have a kiln or access to one so I'd give it a shot. I took a strip off the add which had phone and email on it. Tried calling, no answer so I emailed her telling her what I do and that I needed somewhere to fire my works.
She got back to me within a couple days saying she'd love to and is interested in meeting another potter in the area.
Though I'm more an ocarina maker than a potter, I guess you can't be the one without the other.
She's on a 2 month trip so now I just play the waiting game.....and so maybe, over the next couple months while I wait, maybe I'll try making a few more so I've got a couple ready to fire for when she's back!
and maybe you'll be seeing what I come up with over the next lil while!

Sorry to ramble for so long! If you actually read it, thanks!
I'm glad you're actually interested in what I have to say! Thanks for being a loyal subscriber!

Take it easy guys!
I hope to hear what you think of my new bass!

  • @AndrewBroxton You know I had the same thought. Maybe she could get some use out of it and help her out and at the same time, I'd be able to use my own kiln and she'd probably even be able to help me learn how to fire things. I know how to make stuff but I've never used a kiln before so this could be a really good learning and beneficial situation for both of us maybe

  • you should ask her if she needs another kiln. Just a thought

  • @burgekingman It's good to be back! Hope more people have missed me and haven't forgotten me on the tube :p

I usually see you time to time there although I barely get shifts anymore. And man, you've no idea the junk they're putting me through with my kiln and car. Money can sure make people change or act differently.

  • @isthisthingontest123 lol it sure is! Thanks!
