Problems with my 4 cylinder auto Mitsubishi Magna TR SE 1992.

edit: going on a suggestion by someone on Mitsubishi forums, i have checked the TPS (throttle position sensor), and it wasn't working properly. i scrubbed the rust off the connections, hit it, and it hasn't screwed up since.

hope that helps other people who have the same problem. i paid $180 for nothing, hope that doesn't happen to you.

  • Wow... My 93 TR Magna is does this. So you just replaced the ECU? That's it? Ive had to replace the distributor and idle control but they only postponed the issue.

This has caused me a year of pain and grief as It is my first car yet it did this occasionally. Then it got so bad so I replaced those parts I mentioned. No mechanic could figure it out. Not even the local mitso workshop.

  • @DPhilpsy99 yep. as soon as the ECU (box thing under the passengers glove box) was replaced, the issue went away.

  • dhanuka8000, i wasn't trying to go anywhere. it was in neutral.

peaceoftoast, and anyone else who cares, this problem was solved (quite a while ago) by replacing the ECU.

  • oh i have had this problem before!! never knew what it was has happend twice i have a 92 TR but usually it just starts working again? really weird? whats TPS?

  • throttle position sensor.

if you get one of those car manuals that goes through all the parts of a car and how to check it and hit (i have a max ellerys one), it goes through where the TPS is, and how to check and fix it.

  • how you fix the problem that wat happen to my car it the rpm goes up and down then it turn off. tell me plz

  • i think you forgot the handbrake?

  • DUDE!

    i got 3.5 magna,

had similer problem where when the speedmeter goes zero the rpm jumps and the car switchs off,

On the left side of the engine you will find a cable going from the top left side to the engine, its a sensor, change it and the car will be fine,

    good luck.
