I use Traktor. The two songs were pretty far away in tempo. First song 143 bpm the second 136, that's why I have to spin the jog like crazy. The pitch control is a little shitty on the TC so I don't really recommend mixing this way, it was just a demonstration that it is possible, but not 100% accurate (Traktor Pro can't jump 0.1 BPM-s like Traktor 3 did+TotalControl doesn't send out enough MIDI signals).

Anyway, it is fun and trains your ears so do it, but I am definitely not an enemy of the sync button. I see a lot of people commenting that Sync button sucks but I learnt beatmatching in 3 days, using pitchfader and jog and of course without looking at the songs tempo. However there are people commenting against the Sync button who look at the songs BPM and manually adjust the pitch. Now if you push Sync then it takes 1 sec to do it, but if you want to ACT like a DJ you can monkey around with the pitch fader, hoping your software will allow you setting it to a round number. Anyway, beatmatching is done by the ears not by visual cues like BPM number and the phase meter in Traktor. Beatmatching two songs with the same BPM using your jog is not a skill, it is a damn basic thing so again, you don't have to post your antisync comments on youtube and feel that you are something special.

You can decide: you do it all by ears and you can say you can do beatmatching, or you use the help of modern technics and speed up the process by looking at the BPM. Phase meter isn't always reliable.

I hope I could help and didn't want to offend anybody! Have fun with your music. Peace guys!

  • beginner dj here. one question, do you guys lock the master key when beat matching? is it ok when i'm trying to learn or will it not be good thing?

  • @xygnal If you lock the key then for example you can turn down the tempo of the song without getting the sound lower. Usually DJ-s chose songs close in tempo to each other (like 1-5 bpm difference). If you do it this way you don't have to lock key. Locking key in that case is not preferred because it lowers the sound quality a bit, but if you want to mix a 120 bpm song with a 135bpm then you have no choices so you have to turn the key lock on. I hope I could help.

  • good work here - it is easy to understand the way you explained it. i also agree that you have to do it by your ears without visual or technical helps. otherwise it is no real djing in my opinon - it's cheating. sometimes i look at the bpm counter as well, but it doesn't feel like you really gained some skill, i feel more like fooling myself. doing it just with my ears feels so much better, because i actually achieved some skill and feel my talent.

  • @CarwashBastard thanks! The question is you want to improve your musical skills or you want have significantly more time while mixing (using sync). Both have their beauties. I am glad I could help and good luck with your improvement!

  • very well done

  • hi

  • @spacehippie Szeva! Jól láttad, idén lesz a 7. zsinórban.

  • Hey,

láttam az ozorás szalagod, miközben nézegetem a traktor-total controller videókat...

Psytrancehez akarok én is új kontrollert venni, eddig egy egyszerű m-audiot használtam...

    Tapasztalat? Kezelhetőség? Megbízhatóság?

    ciaooo

  • Thanks Yoshi! I think you can break the habit but you see that one can practice beatmatching with the Total Control too! If you can do it on this with it's shitty pitch fader then you will have it easy with a CD player.

Btw Reloop Digital Jockey 2 has a good pitch fader with 24bit MIDI I heard!
