Walt Disney Productions' first animated feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out in 1937. The character of Snow White was derived from a fairy tale known from many countries in Europe, the best known version being the Bavarian one collected by the Brothers Grimm. Therefore, there is no basis for a lawsuit, when you consider it was produced in 1937.

Which is the ultimate hypocrisy of Disney. They built their fortune using the works of others which were beyond copyright, then they forced the US government to extend copyright so all their work is protected to this day... By pre-Disney copyright, if applied today, this movie and most of their pre-1980s classics would be public domain and could be fairly distributed (while they can still make merchandise for their characters). They burned the bridge as soon as they had crossed it.

By the way, The Walt Disney Company currently has a trademark application pending with the US Patent and Trademark Office, filed November 19, 2008, for the name "Snow White" that would cover all live and recorded movie, television, radio, stage, computer, Internet, news, and photographic entertainment uses, except literature works of fiction and nonfiction.
