Self-driving cars are hardly new. We've seen dozens of automatic vehicles over the years, many of which have seen advances driven (so to speak) by various DARPA challenges. But now that Google's involved -- whoa! -- the mainstream media is suddenly whipped into a frenzy of hyperbolic proclamations about the future. Still, it is fascinating stuff to watch. It might also make car theft rather easy if your car could be stolen by someone that hacks into it over the internet while its parked.

@gallagher123123 The primary problem in self driving cars becoming a reality has nothing to do with the technology. It has to do with the cost of the system (which would reduce to acceptable if it was mass produced) and then another very important aspect.

Everyone involved in an accident would sue the software publishers and the hardware manufacturers for causing the accident. Even if the new system was ten times safer.

Until that's sorted you won't buying a driverless car.
