Theatre was active in Seattle and Tacoma in the 1980's...An original progressive instrumental, Locust was the song we opened all of our live shows with; we usually played it even faster than this 24-track demo tape (recorded at Triangle Studio in Ballard in 1985, now closed I think).

Peter Barnes was the engineer on the tape.

  • This has got to be one of my favorite Theatre songs. You guys were fantastic and it was so much fun seeing you inspire and support each other as much as you did. You loved what you were doing and it showed. You should have gone further. You were stars in our books! A great band and great friends!!

  • Wow, thanks so much - we did love it! It seems we had some great fans too.

  • I remember the "drum cage" from '82 or so (wasn't there a car hood at one point?). This is a fantastic recording, it really captures the sound I remember from seeing this awesome band live.

  • Well-remembered! It was the back of a Maytag dryer, I believe, that John (our drummer) had hung from the back of the cage...used to great effect in 'Transitions', 2 versions of which on the Theatre1982 channel (live & rehearsal).

Thanks for your comments - do you remember where you saw us?

  • hey john...i just found this band as i was wandering around the internet..i can't believe that you guys didnt make it farther than what you did. This stuff is really good and incredibly progressive for the 1980's. I want to know more about you guys.

  • Thanks for your kind words citabria...(I'm sure John - Theatre's drummer - will also revel in them!)

More info on the Theatre1982 channel, lots of original music and audio-only versions of our stuff.

    Thanks again for commenting

  • Thanks Jill! XXOO

  • Thanks for listening, commenting and especially remembering us! :-) Yes, as stated it was the back off of a 1960's Maytag dryer (can't remember the exact year but it was a good year for dryer backs! ;-) A car hood is a pretty good idea though . . .

Do we know you buttmunchhausen? Or are you just one of the awesome few strangers who didn't feel obligated to like THEATRE, but did anyway?

Take care and come back again.

  • The time period THEATRE spanned was very dismal for prog rock unfortunately, around 1979 to 1986 and pretty much disco, punk and new wave were the kings in those days. We tried to get gigs but clubs wanted top 40 only and we felt fortuate to play twice a year (at best) for free at festivals etc. We were doing difficult stuff (modesty aside) and practicing up to 4 days a week with no financial return and almost zero emotional return (other than feeling good about pulling that stuff off! ;-)

  • In all seriousness we really do appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. (and of course especially because you liked it ;-)

There is a bunch of info on the site but what questions do you have in particular?

We all pretty much just work reletively boring day jobs now, even though the thought of one day again playing that type of music keeps calling.

  • HOORAY!!! citabria74 is our biggest (and only) fan! ;-)

You'll have to forgive Kevin and I, we have been sitting in front of your computers for 4 months straight waiting for the world to bless us with the high praise we never received! Our famliy members stopped bringing us roasted chickens and beverages a couple weeks ago so we had almost given up hope! LOL!

I have more comments that I'll include in following posts.
