@JonThm - Again I find your post surprisingly vague for someone who claims to have the qualifications you say you have. Hence I asked for specifics regarding the radiation astronauts are exposed to. So I'll help you out (with info YOU should have been providing, not me :-)) In space, the main radiation concerns are cosmic rays, x-rays, gamma-rays and solar particle events such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). So please state the difference of such radiation inside and outside the magnetosphere.

If your qualification claims are true then you should know that it's the type, intensity and duration of radiation exposure that counts, not merely it's existence. The longest Apollo mission was only 12 days! So please state the main radiation types that astronauts should be concerned about and explain the difference in those radiation levels between low earth orbit, mid-way between earth and moon, and on the surface of the moon itself.

@MTMind2 my degree covered the affects of radiation throughout the universe. I got an M Eng in 1986. Travel through outer space in a solar system is fatal for their radiation shielding! That the Apollo missions did not have.

I assume you mean a journey to Mars? If so, then Mars is where the real difficulty is with radiation, because it will take about 9 months to get there, then the astronauts will have to spend months on the surface before the 9 month journey back to earth.
