  • The minimoog sounds richer than the Yamaha. I read that there's no special chips in the moog, whereas if the CS synths go wrong there's no spares for them. So a minimoog is probably a better choice for many years of enjoyment. Is this right?

  • @Laura041974 The Yamaha chips have been reverse-engineered but the parts in the Moog are more readily available.

The Moog filters are better, too. The Yamaha does have aftertouch and 4-note polyphony, which the Moog lacks, and the ring mdulation on the Yamaha is incredible so it would be a hard choice.

Overall, I like the Moog sound more than the Yamaha sound. Also, the Minimoog is much smaller and lighter. If you're taking it anywhere it really matters.

    Hope this helps.

  • @cxpage Thank you for replying. Does that mean that someone is making new chips? This is being done for early solid state pinballs too! There was a CS50 in ebay where I live but I didn't bid because two people were trying to win it in the last few seconds and it ended at over £900.

  • @Laura041974 I don't know if they are making new chips so much as making new circuit boards that replicate the chips. There seems ot be plenty of room inside the synth for them.

If you're looking for a Moog there are often some of the later Moogs on Ebay (Micromoog etc.) and they are less expensive than the Mini.

Another option that you might look into is something like the MicroKORG. It's not true analog but it is surprisingly versatile and useful.

    Good luck.

  • They're so lucky! In the 80s, I tried to get synth sounds with Grandad's electric organ, I couldn't get the sounds I wanted. Grandad should have spent his pension on these! I like synth videos with children because they don't have a fixed idea this synth is for this sort of music but take each one on its own merits!

  • Greetings from Sweden, I'm a synth dad with two boys as well (6 and 9 years old). Seeing the kids enjoy our instruments is great isn't it! ;)

  • I couldn't be more envious of their improv skills. Why is it that when we get fat and lose our hair, we also lose a lot of our creativity? Growing old can be terrible.

  • so very true!!

  • The future depends on good musicians... train them well.
