@tomrollock You can blame Lenin,He knew what sort of man Stalin was and as Stalin got more powerful and Lenin's health failed he lost control, even in the face of some pretty unpleasant insults and threats to his wife he didn't remove him when he could have.He was afraid. Lenin definition of wrong man, wrong place, wrong time when it all happened. He came to power with the aid of Germany, the famous sealed train, fully stocked with weapons by Germany it swung the balance in the chaos.

A 'hero' is subjective in the end. It implies the idea of objective right or wrong. Anyone can percieve a situation or result as good or bad. Hitler is one of the biggest villain this planet has ever had, but to those that adopt far right outlooks on the master race he'll be 'their hero.' In the case of Trotsky, he might be a hero to those choosing to identify themselves as the impoverished working masses, but to others he'll be seen as an antagonist to their own values of economic independance.
