I'm not sure if everything is shown here, but this looks like interference (from sound waves) where two sound sources crosses, gathering particles at the places where the waves cancel each other out. I might be wrong about the setup though. This is a classical experiment that shows how waves work (same experiments can be done for light, water waves and electrons too)
