7-22-10 gasoline tanker accident

On 7/22 at 1800 hrs TFR responded to the Marathon Fuel Terminal at 425 S 20th Street in the Port of Tampa. A fuel tanker exiting the terminal hit a cement post. The impact damaged the tanker. The tanker was carrying about 8,000 gallons of gas in 5 separate compartments. Two compartments were leaking. A total of 2,000 gallons of gasoline fell to the ground but fortunately it was being contained on Marathon's property. Most of the spilled fuel went into drains on the property and into a fuel water separator so there will not be any pollution.

Tampa fire crews sprayed foam on the gasoline to prevent any accidental ignition of the vapors. Tampa hazardous materials team members used gas monitors to assure the fuel vapors were not getting to high levels.

At this time the 6,000 gallons of gasoline on the damaged tanker is being pumped off. Once the damaged tanker is empty it will be moved back onto the terminal property and the area will return to normal.

20th Street between Durham and Grant Streets has been closed during this operation; local detours have been in effect. Residences near the incident were alerted to the danger but no evacuations were necessary.

At the height of the incident TFR had 2-alarms on scene. This brought 7 fire engines, 2 ladder trucks, 3 rescue cars, a hazardous materials team, foam carrying equipment and several chief officers to the scene. An estimated 50 responders were on scene from fire stations in Palmetto Beach, Ybor City, Downtown, Jackson Heights, East Tampa, Hyde Park and Robles Park.
