It's possible that your cat has asthma. Your cat sounds exactly like mine did. He struggled with asthma for 4 years. We used prednisone to control it. I would go get your little guy checked out ASAP.

Please take your cat to the vet to rule out FIP. this is particularly relevant if you cat is around 1 year old and the coughing is becoming more frequent. I hope it is not FIP and your cat gets better soon. I don't want to worry you unnecessarily but my beautiful tonk had it and sounded just like your kitty. Thankfully it is quite rare, so hopefully your cat has something else. Good luck.

Sorry to say its a hairball or asthma but your cat sounds like a old man coughing.

Sounds like feline asthma. Vet tech here with a 9 y.o. asthmatic cat, confirmed with chest X rays 5 years ago. The chest X rays are the most accurate way to diagnose this, although they can sometimes come back negative if the cat has been attack free for a while. Suggestion: If it happens again, video it and take that vid and this one (both) to the vet, and have chest X rays done. BTW, I have a Tonk too who looks just like yours. He's not the one with asthma, though. It's my Birman mix female.

It can be an hairball, he can be trying to get it out of its throath, or its asthma.

@pantera01826 Lysine helps immune system. Herpes is viral antibiotics are useless.
Lysine is $ 26 @ vets for the 5oz tube. Found it for $17 I buy three and get free shipping from petmeds.com
My cat has herpes and asthma and I think your cat does also. My cat was sneezing blood and I thought trying to expel hair balls. I vacuum under beds and on top of furniture and clean bathroom daily and he is seemingly much much better. No more bloody sneezing or asthma attacks.

My cat does this too! Thank you for posting. I just found out he has asthma but I had no idea that a kitty asthma attack looks like a weird hairball dry heave. He sounded fine at the vet and had negative bloodwork but I just took him in and saw his chest xray and he definitely has it. Apparently what I thought was little grunts was actually him wheezing, poor baby!

This cat has Cat Asthma! Get him on an AeroKat inhaler with Flovent (and Albuterol as needed). WAY better than Prednisone since it doesn't have all the side-effects that come with steroids. Your cat can live a much longer, healthier life with the Flovent!!!!!!! Help him!
