Yeah, the lip-synching is terrible, but I think the good news is that someone managed to slip in the original version for the show! Could explain why the singer was having such a hard time keeping time - or he could have been protesting that his singing wasn't being used. I don't think I'd be happy if I was him.

It was rare for a song to be sung live on TV from a certain point on, still is. Don't know if this started in the 60s or not.  Remember, even the singing in videos in lip-synched.
