http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2009/englishsurgeon What is it like to have power over life and death, and yet to struggle with your own humanity? This is the story of acclaimed British neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, who has traveled to Ukraine for 15 years to treat patients who have been left to die; of his friend and medical colleague in Kyiv who carries on the fight despite official hostility and archaic surgical conditions; and of a young patient who hopes that Henry can save his life.

"The English Surgeon" by Geoffrey Smith airs on PBS Tuesday, September 8, 2009 (Check local listings). Tense, heartbreaking and humorous, "The English Surgeon" is a remarkable depiction of one doctor's commitment to relieving suffering and of the emotional turmoil he undergoes in bringing hope to a desperate people. PBS airdate: September 8, 2009. Check local listings and more http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2009/englishsurgeon

  • i saw this documentary yesterday on dutch tv it was... i don't know interesting i gues i mean i'm still talking about it.

  • Doctors Marsh and Kurilets are true humanitarians.

  • completely moving and inspirational and brutal as well to see the reality of these brave people. God bless them all.

  • And how would the same situation play out in America? Would a doctor be able to make decisions such as this or would the insurance industry intrude? Today that is the question here. Its a shame that we can't just see the humanity in this video but have to wonder about the inhumanity too.

  • This is why POV is my favorite.

  • This is heart-warming to see.

  • touching
