in Schenectady at the corner of State st and Grove Pl a man is gunned down by police... the man had a gun.

SCHENECTADY -- Three police officers, fearing that a man fleeing along State Street was about to shoot at them, fired 14 shots at the man, mortally wounding him Friday afternoon.
The man killed was identified as Luis R. Rivera, 32, who officials say has a long criminal history for weapon possession.
Police officers, who were not injured, were identified as Sgt. William Fennell and officers Michael Wood and Kevin Raybal.
At a news conference Friday, Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett said the incident unfolded at 4:24 p.m. when Fennell responded to State Street and Grove Place and tried to stop Rivera after a report from a citizen about a man carrying a handgun.
Fennell left his car and started chasing Rivera, grabbing him. Rivera broke free, lifted his shirt and reached toward a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, Bennett said. Wood and Raybal, responding in their car, and Fennell, fired the shots at Rivera. It was unknown how many shots struck him or where they hit him. Police weer not sure Friday night whether the gun was loaded.
An autopsy is planned Saturday.
A further investigation will be conducted by the District Attorney's office, State Police and internally.
Bennett said Rivera was paroled in 2007.
The shots were fired down Grove Place during a busy time of day. Bennett said police had to deal with the circumstances as they happen.
"We don't pick the time or the place where these things happen," Bennett said.
Fennell has 10 years on the force. Wood started a year ago and Raybal has been a city officer for two years.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (WTEN) -- Schenectady police say a 32-year old man was killed during an officer-involved shooting late Friday afternoon.

During a press conference hours later police identified that man as Luis Rivera, of Schenectady, who they said had a lengthy criminal record and was no stranger to them.

The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. on State Street in the city, near its intersection with Grove Street.

According to details revealed the press conference, the incident began when numerous 911 calls were placed that reported a man in the area with a gun. That man was Rivera.

Police responded to the scene and attempted to arrest Rivera once they could tell he was armed. Rivera then apparently resisted and began to run away. At this time, three city officers opened fire on Rivera, firing a total of 14 shots, killing him.

Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett said the officers involved will not face any disciplinary action, but are on administrative leave until they feel ready to return to work. He called the shooting, "a terrible tragedy, but within policy."

  • @marcar300 What? Do Not Take THIS VIDEO Down! it was on all of the news channels already and we all need to be aware of what is happening out on the streets. This is a documentary and that is obvious. you can't censor a documentary and it's not disrespectful at all. those who call for censoring are un american.

  • I feel for the guy's family, but try to put yourself into the respective frames of mind. Imagine being a cop with a family getting a call about a guy running around with a gun- a bad situation where nothing can be trusted except what you're seeing at the moment. Then I try to put myself in the guy with the gun's position and all I hear are crickets in the night- I cannot imagine what is going through someone's mind that posseses them to act in that way.
