This is my comparison of buying a premade retail computer from dell (the XPS 720) and buying the parts to assemble yourself.

Watch to see how much money can be saved.

Sorry for the weird voice and sloppiness of this video, but it was recorded late at night and I was trying not to wake anybody up.

Please post if there is an incompatibility that I didn't realize, or a fault in the system.

Thanks, and enjoy!

  • Why don't you make a video where you put it all together?

  • Heh, well I need to save up a little more, as a teenager, even with all the money saved, I still need to work long hours to earn over $1k.

If and when I do build my next computer, I will make a video tutorial of it.

  • what about ensuranse? and hardware suport?

sorry my english ;) (i just bought an xps720)

  • If you know how to build a computer, chances are you know what your doing with computer hardware. You usually get a warranty from the site you purchase it from, but yes, it is less than normal.

  • generally, people who make custom pcs are smart enough to repair their pcs themselves...and rarely do their tower get failed...ever

  • Thing is newegg is in pounds so i cant buy from there.

  • This is the way to go for someone who knows how to build a computer on their own but If you were to sell that same system you built what kind of OS,software packages and warranty service would you offer your customers? Could you compete with Dell then?

  • another thing, i know i said i just bought the xps m1530, obviously thats a laptop so its not as comparable as a desktop but just to be clear, i was just making a point about dell that covers laptops and desktops, which is security (from theft and with your investment) and software, and all the perks and convenience dell offers.

just wanted to make clear i thought it was a great video and i am all for this idea of building your own computer if you can, i just wouldnt know how :)

  • awesome video man, but 1 thing, did that 720 you were comparing have warranties, software, and other stuff that you didnt mention? i just bought the xps m1530 and what i was really impressed by was how secure im going to be with my investment. warranties for parts/accidental damage/theft, everything. and there was also software i got (like office and stuff). anwyay, great vid! you should make a video showing money saved by building compared to buying an alienware, you could make them look awful.

  • nice

  • Just because you can't build a computer and you got ripped off doesn't mean you can dis other people. No one cares about customer service unless your too fucken dumb to fix a problem with a computer. If you know how to build a computer you most likely know what goes wrong if your custom one does have an issue. Also, a lot of people enjoy building pc's so don't be pissy and don't complain here.

  • ha.. with 2 8800 ultras and a quad core.. and an xfi platinum... and 4 gigs of 1600 ram?? you need a 1000 watt with separate rails dedicated to gpu alone.

  • pain.. when you can just buy the box put together. who cares if dells customer svc is mostly indians.. at least its SOME kind of cus. svc.. what happens when your shiz stops working? can you send it back in and get a new one within 3 days? you can with dell.. ill pay the xtra money for peace of mind and less hassle. stop being frugal and spend some money on something thats gonna last you at least 3 years.

  • first off.. youre picking cheap garbage... like the ram... the lcd.... the cddvd burner.... its all crap compared to the 720.. ive got 2gb of corsair dominator and it will smoke your "red" ram.. i got my xps for 1600 due to a mil discount. youre a noob. who wants to put the crap together which is easy but a
